Boston Murder & Crime Rates Down
BOSTON, MA – SEPTEMBER 2009
Boston’s crime rates have fallen, which is consistent with the overall trend across the country in major cities. Many cite efforts that began when Mayor Thomas Menino took office in 1993 and the Boston Police Department implemented a strong community policing policy. This decrease had been the trend for much of the 1990s, until violence started creeping up again in 2005. In that year, homicides reached a 10-year high of 75. Menino implemented crime-reducing, community policing programs that yielded positive results. In 2008, there were 63 murders in the city, compared with 39 year-to-date for 2009.
“We have the lowest crime rate in 40 years right now in the city of Boston,’’ Menino boasted during a recent WBZ debate.
