Drug Crimes

Drug Trafficking Charges in the News: Lakeville Man with Prior Drug Trafficking , Assault and Battery Convictions Charged with Cocaine and Methamphetamine Trafficking

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Christopher DiRusso was charged in federal court after an August 2026 search of a commercial building in Lakeville allegedly uncovered more than 2,000 grams of cocaine, thousands of counterfeit methamphetamine pills and drug packaging materials. Prosecutors allege that he possessed the drugs with the intent to distribute them.

DiRusso has prior convictions for cocaine trafficking and firearm offenses, as well as a separate conviction for indecent assault and battery on a child. The federal charges carry a potential sentence of 10 years to life in prison, along with at least five years of supervised release and a fine of up to $10 million.

Drug Trafficking Penalties: Why Are They More Severe Than Possession Charges?

Drug trafficking charges are much more serious than simple possession. Prosecutors may allege possession with intent to distribute when the circumstances, such as the quantity of drugs, packaging, communications, cash or other evidence, suggest that drugs were intended for sale or distribution.

The type and amount of controlled substance can have a major impact on potential punishment. Federal law, for example, provides particularly severe penalties for trafficking substantial quantities of drugs such as cocaine and methamphetamine.

A conviction can result in years or even decades in federal prison, substantial fines and lengthy periods of supervised release. Mandatory minimum sentences may also apply depending on the drug, quantity and defendant’s criminal history.

Your Prior Record Can Make a Difference

A defendant’s prior convictions can be extremely important in a new drug prosecution.

A prior conviction does not necessarily have to involve the same type of crime to affect the consequences of a new case. Depending on the applicable sentencing laws, prior convictions can contribute to a defendant’s criminal history or otherwise affect sentencing exposure even when the earlier offense was unrelated to the current drug allegation. It is not simply previous drug convictions, but the defendant’s complete criminal history that matters.

In the Lakeville case, the defendant’s reported history includes previous drug-trafficking and firearm convictions, but also a conviction for a sex offense. For someone with a checquered criminal record, the potential sentencing consequences of a new federal drug conviction can be dramatically different from those facing a first-time offender.

Experienced Drug Trafficking Defense Matters

When the potential punishment includes a lengthy mandatory minimum or even life imprisonment, it is extremely important to have an attorney who understands both the substantive drug laws and the sentencing consequences.

An experienced criminal defense attorney can examine the government’s evidence, investigate the search and seizure, challenge evidence when appropriate, evaluate whether prosecutors can establish possession and intent to distribute, and carefully analyze the defendant’s prior convictions and their potential effect on sentencing. Drug trafficking cases can also involve complicated questions about federal jurisdiction, the applicable sentencing guidelines and whether mandatory minimum provisions apply.

Why Choose a Local South Shore Defense Attorney?

For someone facing federal or state drug charges on the South Shore, working with an attorney who regularly practices in the local courts can bring strategic advantages.

A local criminal defense attorney understands the legal environment in which your case will be handled and can offer representation that takes into account not only the charges, but also the circumstances of your life and community.

That can be particularly important when you have prior convictions, a substantial quantity of drugs is alleged, or the substance involved carries severe penalties. Your freedom, finances, employment and reputation may all be at stake.

A serious drug trafficking charge requires dedicated defense. If you are under investigation or have been charged with drug trafficking in Massachusetts, speaking with a member of our team at O’Brien Law Boston can help you get to grips with a potentially life-changing situation.
